THE CHAINSAW CARVING PROCESS
Just how do you find that carving in that old stump?

This is a question I get asked with every carving I do. The answer is not always that easy to explain, but I will do my best...here goes...

STEP 1: Find the angle that you/your client want the carving to face. Set up scaffolding if needed & get all the equipment out and set up.
STEP 2: Once the angle is decided on, the chainsaw artist can begin to mark off the first cuts with spray paint, marker, crayons, or anything else that will write on wood and be easy to see.
STEP 3: Fire up the saw and start making the first cuts. With every carving there are specific cuts that need to be made in order to "find" what it is you are carving. In the case of this eagle, the first two cuts come down the sides and swoop out at the bottom. This begins to shape the sides of head.
STEP 4: Once the first set of cuts are complete, the chainsaw artist can move on and begin to shape the carving working from top to bottom and working up to the detailing.
STEP 5: Burn the carving, this helps with getting the little burrs off and helps with the sealing process.
STEP 6: Paint then Seal the entire carving.
STEP 7: Cut the carving free of the stump to prevent any future growth of any suckers and leaves.
